Apple versus Samsung: the battle for best new device

By PAUL RODRIGUEZ

It’s early in the morning. The mall is only loud in one section and people can be heard talking. It’s not Christmas, but somehow feels like it.  It must be the annual Apple phone release. This time, people are still waiting outside the Apple store an entire week after the phones were released.

The mobile phone global market is filled with many carriers and devices, but out of all of them, Samsung and Apple are leading sales by a wide margin. According to Forbes, Samsung leads in global sales while Apple maintains a close spot at second.

In the month of September, both of the mobile superpowers have announced flagship devices showcasing new technology in the world. Samsung started the month with an announcement of their new phablet, the Samsung Note 4. A week later, Apple announced the iPhone 6 and the new “bigger” iPhone 6 Plus. Both companies have struck the markets with their best new devices.

During this annual release, Apple is looking to win back some users who left looking for a larger screen size. Apple has long stayed with smaller displays due to the fear of losing the ability to use the devices with one hand. Now, it is leaping forward in a big way.

Samsung is releasing their new Note 4 with the intention of securing the larger screen market, something they have led in the past 4 years since the release of the original Note in 2011. Along with the release of the Note 4, Samsung is also releasing the Note Edge, a variant of the Note 4 with an even larger display.

New Lifestyle Vs. Conformity

“I own all Apple devices and when a new iPhone is released, I am always first in line to buy it.” Sarah Tomlin, mother of two said while standing in line waiting for new iPhone on Monday.

Apple does not only sell electronics, they essentially sell a lifestyle. A lifestyle that is freely marketed by celebrities, star-athletes, and the general public. In a world always innovating technology, Apple teaches the rest of the world that their products will innovate them and look good while doing it.

Samsung does not promise a better lifestyle. Instead, they want to create products that work with the person using it. Their marketing reach is one of the main reasons they still lead in global sales. Samsung’s philosophy is to create devices that fit person’s lifestyle instead of trying to innovate a new one.

“Samsung releases everything they think of, big phones, small phones, thin phones, wide phones, plastic phones, and metal phones.” Vlad Savov, a reporter from The Verge said.

The Verge is a well-respected technology website that is known for its products reviews, in-depth reporting and long-form stories.

Specifications

Apple’s newest phones are finally adopting the larger screen sizes that a lot of people expressed they wanted. The iPhone 6 is 4.7-inch screen with over 300 pixels per inch. It includes a brand-new camera sensor, which will deliver better, sharper photos, something Apple has always exceled in. The “bigger than big” iPhone 6 Plus display is a 5.5-inch screen and the camera is upgraded to include optical image stabilization, which will further improve the camera for low-light performance.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 was released in early April 2014, with the 5.1-inch screen and it has been the most popular phone for most of the year. The to-be-released Samsung Note 4 has a 5.7-inch display that is Quad HD (1440p), which is even higher than HD (1080p). The camera will be also improved with optical image stabilization. The Samsung Note 4 will be released October 17, something that could really hurt the device’s sales, since it will be available a month after Apple’s release.

New Technology

On the side of new technology, Apple announced their new Apple Watch. It will be newest addition to the Apple lifestyle.

The Apple Watch is not the first in its category of “wearables”. Currently, Samsung already has three different “wearables” in the category and are expected to release another one before the Apple Watch in early 2015.

Sales

“When Apple releases a new device, people get super crazy, and I get ready for long (work) shifts of people yelling at me to get them one.” Nikki Garcia, an employee of a local mobile carrier store in Atlanta said.

With over 10 million phones sold, Apple has broken records with the newest release. The company is looking more like a one that is able to constantly reinvent themselves to maintain and promote the lifestyle they represent.

On the opposite hand, Samsung was the first of the two to announce their new flagship phone, yet the phone has not been released. It will not be available until October 11, almost an entire month after the release of Apple’s phones.

Marketing

Other companies in the mobile industry are struggling to keep up, although many provide the newest technology in great looking phones. Yet, unlike Apple and Samsung, the marketing budget of these companies is non-existent.

Apple has kept to the roots of their marketing strategy with clean ads that usually do not attack other companies. The ads only talk about the newest device and how it is lifestyle changing.  Recently, celebrities such as Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon provide the voiceovers that describe the phone’s news features.

Samsung uses their marketing resources to reach more individuals than any other in the industry.  Samsung’s ads attack any other phone, including Apple, HTC, and LG. Every ad concludes with the newest Samsung winning in that category.

User’s choice

In the industry of two major powerhouses exist tons of smaller companies trying to please the individuals. If you want a phone that is in the 4.5 to 5-inch display range then iPhone, Motorola, HTC, and even Google all have phones that exist. If you want a phone is similar in size to the iPhone 6 Plus or Samsung Note 4, companies like One Plus One, Windows, and LG all produce cell phones to suit your needs. Although most of these companies are not quite as successful as Apple or Samsung, they continue to produce mobile devices that are innovative and use the newest chip-sets and technological advances for the market.

With all of the companies producing new-age cell phones, the industry leading companies are still growing faster than ever.

Both Apple and Samsung approach the public in completely different ways. Apple sells the modern, sleek lifestyle and will streamline everything in your career and life. Samsung sells products that fit your current situation whether the user needs a phone that is virtually indestructible, or a phone that is 6.3 inches big.
